Budgeting For Your Visit to Prague

If you are backpacking around Eastern Europe, then you will find the Prague is certainly not the bargain it used to be. Nonetheless, it is still a fairly cheap destination provided you find the right places to go. Having spent a lot of time in Prague over the last few years, I have now come up with a series of recommendations of good places to eat and drink in the city and elsewhere in the country. You can find more information on my website.

If you are staying in hostels, eating in most of the time and travelling by bus, then you should be able to comfortably get by on about €20 per day but this certainly wouldn't include nightlife or anything like that.

The standard price for hostel accommodation in Prague is up to €12 but it varies a little depending on the season. If you want spend a little less money, it is a good idea to stay in a place a bit out of the centre. Prague has a very reliable transport system and it is also cheap too and what's more, if you stay out of the centre, you'll find it much easier to find cheap places to eat and drink.

As far as restaurants go, you can spend any amount of money you like in Prague. However, there is no reason why you should have to spend more than about €10 on a good meal and a few drinks. In fact, Prague has some very good value restaurants but it also has a fair share of rip-off joints which you should avoid. It is a good idea to check the menus before sitting down as they are usually kept outside on the street.

Nightlife in Prague is not overly expensive but again, it depends where you go. Avoid anywhere on Wenceslas square since this is basically the red light district and you will get ripped off. That is absolutely guaranteed. For an honest, good fun night out, there are plenty of great places where you can expect to spend an absolute maximum of about €1.50 on a glass of wine or a half litre of beer. In more laid back places, and informal bars, pubs and cafes, you shouldn't spend more than about €1.20.

Prague is full of surprises, and regardless of how many precautions you take, things can still go a little bit wrong and a night out can work out a lot more expensive than you thought of the time. Because of this, it is a good idea to have a decent amount of backup money although in general, I would say €20 per day will be enough as a minimum but if you want to enjoy the place and go out a lot, then you will need about 30 to 35 Euros.
